In a world where comfort often trumps conviction, one former NFL player is calling Catholic men to rise—to strengthen not just their bodies, but their souls.
On the latest episode of The Engaged Parish Podcast, our host Mike Josephs is joined by John Chick, a husband, father of thirteen, and founder of ActF8: The Iron Saint Method, a Catholic fitness and accountability ministry for men.
After years of professional football, Chick recognized the same discipline that drove him on the field was essential for growing in holiness. His new movement helps men align physical training with spiritual formation, blending workouts with prayer, virtue, and fraternity.
"The body is the first Gospel before you ever speak," Chick shares.
Through his 56-Day Mission, participants engage in daily “active prayer” workouts, virtue cultivation, and brotherhood that challenge them to serve others, live intentionally, and offer every act for Christ.
For Chick, fitness isn’t about vanity — it’s about holiness. It’s about reclaiming the masculine virtue of sacrifice in a world that avoids discomfort. “We are in battle,” he says. “Our strength is for service — to our families, our brothers, and to God.”
